Who Is Slender Man?

After those 12-year-old girls in Wisconsin stabbed their friend 19 TIMES and blamed it on someone named "Slender Man," the country was interested: who IS Slender Man?

Slender Man is a fictional character depicted as a thin, unnaturally tall man with a blank and usually featureless face, wearing a black suit and is commonly described with long, tentacle-like arms.
Stories of the Slender Man commonly feature him stalking, abducting, or traumatizing people, particularly children. The Slender Man is associated with the forest and has the ability to teleport. Proximity to the Slender Man is often said to trigger a "Slender sickness"; a rapid onset of paranoia, nightmares and delusions accompanied by nosebleeds.
The Slender Man was created on a thread in the Something Awful Internet forum in 2009, with the goal of editing photographs to contain supernatural entities.
The Slender Man soon went viral, spawning numerous works of fan art and online fiction known as "creepypasta": scary stories told in short clips of easily copyable text that spread from site to site. (It began as CopyPasta, a play on the term Copy & Paste.) That’s the site the 12-year-old girls in Wisconsin were visiting- a CreepyPasta Wiki.
There’s also a video series called Marble Hornets. The series is published in found footage style on YouTube (think Blair Witch Project), describing the filmers' fictional experiences with the Slender Man. There will be a feature film based on the series. James Moran, director of Paranormal Activity, is attached to the film.
The terror of the Slender Man is his flexibility; people can shape it into whatever frightens them most. This is especially attractive to children, for whom the line between fantasty and reality is sometimes blurry.
